Simple ways to save energy, money and the environment


Summer Tips

  • Increase the temperature on your thermostat 3 to 5 degrees. You can save up to 2% on your electric cooling bill for each degree that you raise the temperature on your air conditioner.
  • When you're away from home set your thermostat to 85 degrees or higher.
  • Test and repair faulty air conditioning ducts. It can save you up to $250 per year.
  • Clean and inspect air conditioner filters regularly.
  • Use shade trees, window film, awnings, drapes or shades to block hot sunlight.
  • Install ceiling fans to help you stay cool.

Winter Tips

  • Lower your furnace thermostat 3 to 5 degrees. You can save up to 5% on your heating costs.
  • Purchase a more energy-efficient gas furnace.
  • Turn your furnace off when not at home.
  • Keep furnace tuned up with regular maintenance.
  • Clean or replace furnace filters regularly.
  • Open window coverings during the day to let sun in.

Year-Round Tips

  • Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). ENERGY STARĀ® qualifed CFLs. Use as little as 25% of the energy of standard incandescent bulbs and provide the same amount of light.
  • Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
  • Seal and caulk leaky windows and doors or replace windows with energy efficient high-performance ones.
  • Avoid using major appliances before 6 p.m.
  • Wash full laundry loads in cold water and save up to 10% on hot water costs.
  • Purchase an ENERGY STARĀ® qualified washing machine. These models use up to 50% less water and energy per load.
  • Install low-flow aerators on faucets and showerheads.
  • Filter your pool during off-peak hours (before 11 a.m. and after 6 p.m.).
  • When purchasing new pool equipment, look for energy-efficient, variable-speed pump and motor combinations.
  • Use drought-tolerant plants, which need far less water to thrive.
